An Interview :
Traveller.Musician.Explorer.
"Not All who wander are lost"
I use the popular saying "Not all who wander are lost" to begin this piece because that is how I have known Ginny. He is in constant motion, but at the same time he has a stillness about him thats contradictory.
A man with an economics background that he happily left behind to be a musician he describes himself as being a performer by nature
Deviba : Why do you do what you do (why Music ?) What jobs have you done other than being a musician ?
Ginny : I have done jobs like being a waiter, have worked in a bank, also as a production manager, outlet manager for a cafe ... I come back to music every time .. how much ever I try otherwise ..i m living inside music ..and i can't get out.
sounds n instruments fascinate me ..
I am deeply intrigued by how music works with the human mind and how our minds perceive sounds.
D: What’s your strongest memory of your childhood? Describe a real-life situation that inspired you?
G: walking ..taking off alone on the hills..I remember that ! even now every time I m in the hills it helps me reconnect and understand my own perception of sounds which makes it easier to understand others perception of sounds.
D: What’s integral to the work of a Musician ? What is you outlook on life?
G : Its integral to constantly be open n not get stuck with any style of music. constant experimentation is the key.
my outlook changes when I understand words and sounds. when people talk there is a part of the conversation that is remembered and some of this is lost over time. everyone is where they are because of the memory of sound that is stuck in the head. sounds create memories, They trigger n re- trigger emotions n memories
D: Is the life u choose lonely? What do you do to counteract it?
yes it’s very lonely .. very very lonely. I do nothing .. I love being with myself and i embrace the loneliness.
It is like with any other form of art. I gel with musicians or people with similar tastes. it gives me a sense of security or belonging and these few people are enough .. It is easy to loose it very easily. Music to me is abstract. It emerges out of nothing. it’s like a thought wave. It becomes an area of study n research and time signatures, melodies and harmonies n counterpoints. where i am right now is because of all the sounds I have heard .. I have become a song now .. don’t know which one or what ..
D :How has your practice changed over time ? How do you work ?
G : I don’t practice a lot. its just there in my mind. I m always humming. the sounds in my head translate through my fingers.
D : what instruments do you play ? any fav ? why ?
G : I Play wind instruments ,string instruments ,percussion instruments.
percussion or actually all of them. all are interconnected. sometimes I like playing a diff instrument and have someone with a different nature playing instruments I normally do.
Indian classical music starts with one note n from there they take the music to so many places. no limits. no boundaries. those that exist are so that you learn discipline n then u ll give it a new form, once the understanding is there. I like studying things in detail.
D : Should music research be funded ? What role does funding have in its development ?
G : yes, funding would mean more research and interesting flavors of music will emerge and people who play diff styles of music can come together. thats what funding will facilitate and can also be used for documentation and equipment needed for research.
D : What Music do you most identify with?
G : Rock. because I like the attitude it makes u go out there and do things. I can relate most to rock music.
D : What memorable responses have you had to your work ?
G : One is I ve got a lot of love for the work I do and the kind of people I meet through work. artisans and performers that I meet are happy with the experimentation done with their music keeping it pure n adding layers to it.
D : What research to you do ?
G : frequency of the human mind in terms of sound and paintings, instrument research. contemporary n classical music. Their origins, how instruments originated and travelled also a whole lot of folk music research . Tribal music research.
D: What is your dream project ? Professionally, what’s your goal?
G : It will be to make a big long song with a lot of musicians from around the world. A really long song that goes on as much as it can that has the essence of every type of music ..one that all people will relate to.
A song by everyone from street musicians to most popular musicians and everyone in between.
my dream project is also to make instruments that don’t require a formal training to play, Those that do not require one to “learn” music. Easy to play melodic instruments that are harmonious by nature n don’t require in depth knowledge to play it. They should be made of preferably natural elements .. clay wood or glass
what are you currently involved with like wind instruments with one note. made out of bamboo. because of its nature a lot of precision and research is involved with material n technique of playing it.
interactive instruments that are not too complicated . I have a range of such instruments that are hand crafted and I m promoting this form and techniques. It ll be nice to have people come and learn or pick up this trend and take it forward.
I ve also taken great care to look at the aesthetic appeal and surface finish of the instruments and how how they influence the sound.
I wish Ginny the best and wish that his journey be an ever interesting one …
